Thrilling Arrival and a Step Back in Time
Walking through the huge Gwanghwamun gates I honestly had no idea what to expect. I came to the palace before I had ever seen a K- drama so really came in blind.
I was not expecting to see the vibrant colors of the buildings. I arrived just in time for the Royal Guard Ceremony! It was incredible to see the traditional attire and entire ceremony.
While I may not have understood what was happening it was still quite extraordinary to watch.

Gyeongbokgung: The Palace of Great Brightness
This aptly named palace served as the main royal residence during the Joseon Dynasty. Exploring pavilions like the Geunjeongjeon (Throne Hall) offered a glimpse into the opulent lives of the royals.
But what truly surprised me were the serene courtyards and meticulous gardens – a welcome escape from the city’s buzz.
The size of the grounds is staggering, with an incredible number of buildings, each boasting intricate details. This place is massive. It is home to halls, shrines, musuems and pavilions!
Tip for Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace Seoul
Look out for the adorable palace guard figurines stationed throughout the grounds.
If you wear a hanbok you get in for free.
Be prepared for crowds, especially during peak hours. Arrive early if possible.
Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a lot of walking to do!
Learn a few basic Korean phrases. A simple “thank you” (kamsahamnida) goes a long way.
Download a translation app to navigate signs and menus.
Honestly, I would get a tour guide. This place is massive and to fully appreciate all the history and understand what you are seeing this is the best way to do that!

Keep an eye out for filming locations all around the palace grounds! Gyeongbokgung has been featured in countless Korean dramas. I later became a K-drama fan and recognized many spots around the palace from some of my favorite dramas like “Mr. Queen.
How to Get to Gyeongbokgung Palace Seoul
Subway:
Line 3 (Orange Line): Get off at Gyeongbokgung Station, Exit 5. The station is connected to the palace.
Line 5 (Purple Line): Get off at Gwanghwamun Station, Exit 2. It will be a short walk to the main entrance. Make sure you check the exit of the station and don’t exit the station at the wrong exit!
Bus
Blue Bus (main routes): 1020, 109, 7025, or 1711.
Green Bus: 272, 601, 1012.
These buses stop at Gyeongbokgung Palace Station or nearby Gwanghwamun Gate.
Taxi:
You can easily tell the driver Gyeongbokgun or put the palace name into your translation app and show them the name. If you are at a hotel, they should be able to order the taxi and let them know where to go.
