Visa, K-ETA, and Transit Visa Requirements
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization)
Travelers from countries like the U.S., Canada, and the EU will need to apply for a K-ETA before entering South Korea.
It’s simple—just apply online at least 24 hours before departure.
If you are from the U.S., sometimes it will state you do not need one, but you will still need to fill out paperwork upon arrival, having the K-ETA helps you avoid having to fill out the paperwork.
Visa-Free Entry
Nationals from visa-exempt countries can enter South Korea without a visa for up to 90 days.
Transit Visa
If you’re from a non-exempt country and your layover exceeds 24 hours, or you plan to leave the airport, you may need a transit visa.

Getting From Incheon Airport to Downtown Seoul
If you have at least 7 hours to spare during your layover, you can venture into downtown.
You find the train station at the lower level of each terminal. There are a TON of signs.
Seoul. Incheon Airport is connected to the city by several convenient transportation options:
- Airport Express (AREX) Train: The AREX Express Train takes you directly from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station in about 43 minutes. It’s quick, affordable (around $9 USD), and hassle-free.
You can select your seat and there is tons of room for lugggage! I know its not much of a difference then the All- Stop Train but for my first trip it was easier!
- All-Stop Train: 55-60 minutes from the airport to Seoul Station
- Airport Limousine Bus: For a more comfortable option, the airport limousine bus takes 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and stops at multiple locations around Seoul.
- Taxis: If you prefer a door-to-door service, taxis take around 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach downtown Seoul, but the cost is significantly higher (around $50-70 USD).
Time Management: How to Spend Your Layover in Seoul
How to Spend a Short Layover at Incheon Airport – 4 Hours or Less
If you have a layover of 4 hours or less in Seoul, consider staying at Incheon Airport (Terminal 1).
Luckily, Terminal 1 offers a range of things to do while you wait for your next flight.
- Spa on Air: Open 24 Hours for a rejuvenating massage or a nap in one of their sleeping rooms.
- CGV Movie Theater in Terminal 1
- Learn about Korean traditions at one of the Cultural Experience Zones.
However, if you are in Terminal 2 (perhaps taking the shuttle to Terminal 1 is your best option as there are limited options in Terminal 2
If You Have a 5-6 Hour Layover in Seoul
I would stay in Incheon and explore the area. Here are some attractions in Incheon. Alternatively, you can take one of the airports organized tours, but me mindful of timing and give yourself enough time to get through security and customs

The airport offers a large list of Free tours. They do fill up fast, while they have sign ups at the airport, I would recommend you book ahead of time to secure your spot.
How Do you Qualify For a Free Transit Tour?
Check out the Airport website to check on the detailed VISA requirements and countries. If you satisfy any of the following conditions, you can join one of the tours they host without a visa.
Passengers from visa exempt countries still need to obtain K-ETA except the countries/regions which got temporary exemption.
This means if you are from the US- still register for your K-ETA. It is better to be prepared.
To join the Transit tour, you need under 24 hours of layover time. Passengers who have over 24hours of layover cannot join the tour. Sign up In Advance

If You Have a Layover of 8 Hours or More in Seoul
With a layover longer than 8 hours in Incheon, you have enough time to visit downtown Seoul.
If I had an 8 hour layover in Seoul here is what I would do:
I would budget 1.5 hours for transportation to and from the city center back to the airport and then another 2 hours for security and customs when returning to the airport.
That leaves you 3 hours to explore the wonderful city of Seoul!
Depending on which Terminal and if you are going International or Domestic. You may want to add in more time here. I usually fly Terminal 2 which is less busy.
Or the easier option is to do a private tour and have someone pick you up and drop you off!

How to Spend an Overnight Layover in Seoul
If your layover in Seoul includes an overnight stay, you have two main options: stay inside the airport or explore the city.
Stay Inside the Airport
- Transit Hotel (Terminals 1 & 2): These transit hotels are conveniently located airside, so you don’t need to go through customs. They offer private rooms, showers, and a quiet place to sleep.
Hotels Near Incheon Airport
- Grand Hyatt Incheon: A luxury option with an airport shuttle service. They have a very nice spa!
- Best Western Premier Incheon: A mid-range hotel that also offers airport shuttles.
Explore Seoul at Night
If you’d rather explore the city, Seoul has plenty of late-night hot spots. Take the subway into the city and pick an area to explore!
